BUNGO FUTAMIGAURA / Saiki City
As you drive along Route 217 on the coast of Saeki City, Bungo Futamigaura’s so–called ‘Meotoiwa’ (Husband and Wife Rocks) will suddenly come into view. A 17 m tall ‘male’ rock and a 10 m tall ‘female’ rock stand side by side, connected by a huge 65 m rope that weighs approximately 2 t. On the second Sunday each December, around 400 local volunteers come together to perform a Shinto ritual to replace the rope between the ‘Meotoiwa’. This ceremony has been carefully passed down within the local community.
Bungo Futamigaura is also renowned for being a superb scenic spot to be able to view the first sunrise of the year from. In early March and early October, lots of people wait on standby near this area, often for several days in advance in order to capture the spectacular view of the sunrise between the rocks. During the year–end and New Year holidays, the rocks are illuminated and people can be seen praying for good health in the New Year, while surrounded by the majestic natural landscape.
The promenade leading up to the couple’s rocks is perfect for a peaceful stroll while enjoying the sea breeze, but also as a suitable stopover during a scenic drive or bike ride.
