SHONAI KAGURA / Yufu City

In Oita Prefecture, kagura, a traditional form of song, dance and ritual dedicated to the gods, has been passed down from generation to generation. Shonai Kagura is a traditional performing art believed to have been introduced to Shonai Town, Yufu City back in the Edo period. It originated as a ritual offering to a shrine to pray for a bountiful harvest.

The Shonai kagura Zacho–kai, which brings together kagura troupes in Shonai, organises regular performances on the third Saturday of each month from May to October at the Kagura Hall in Shonai Sports Park, with each troupe taking turns to perform. On the 3rd of November, all the troupes come together for the Shonai Kagura Festival.
Shonai Kagura consists of performances based on Japanese mythology, such as Kojiki and Nihonshoki, and is performed at a relatively fast tempo.

The dancers wear masks and vibrant costumes, performing the tales of the gods amidst the sounds of drums and flutes, creating an enchanting experience as if you have wandered into a mythical world. Currently, there are 12 active Kagura troupes, with participation from local elementary, junior high and high school students. It is a significant aspect of the local culture and will continue to be handed down to future generations.
