大水車の郷／小半森林公園 （佐伯市）
佐伯市本匠（ほんじょう）にある「大水車の郷（小半森林公園）」は、昔の暮らしや文化を後世に伝えるため、旧本匠村によって復元された施設です。かつてこの地では、谷あいを流れる豊かな水を利用し、数多くの水車が脱穀や精米、もみすりなどの農作業に使われていましたが、時代の変化とともに姿を消していきました。この場所に復元された「本匠の大水車」の直径は18.18mにも及び、6階建てのビルに相当する迫力のある高さが訪れる人を圧倒します。
水車に隣接する「水車茶屋なのはな」では、本匠名物のそば料理や天然アユの塩焼きなど、地域の味覚を堪能できるほか、そば打ちの体験も行っています。
周辺にある「小半森林公園キャンプ場」では、バンガローでの宿泊や番匠川で水遊びが楽しめ、特に夏場は多くの来場者でにぎわいます。

The ‘Town of the Big Waterwheel (Kohan Forest Park)’ in Honjo, Saiki City, was restored by the old Honjo Village office to preserve the lifestyle and culture of the olden days for future generations. Historically, many waterwheels were used in this area for threshing, milling rice, rice husking and other farming tasks, taking advantage of the abundant water flowing through the valley. However, over time these waterwheels have gradually disappeared with the changing times. The restored ‘Great Water Mill of Honjo’ in Kohan Forest Park has a diameter of 18.18 m, equivalent to a six–storey building, which impresses many visitors.
At the ‘Waterwheel Tea House Nanohana’, next to the waterwheel, visitors can enjoy eating local delicacies such as Honjo’s speciality soba (buckwheat noodle), and grilled natural ayu (sweet fish), as well as try their hand at soba making.
At the nearby ‘Kohan Forest Park Campsite’, visitors can also stay in bungalows and enjoy the Banjogawa River, which attracts many tourists during summer.
