競秀峰・青の洞門 （中津市）
中津市の「競秀峰（きょうしゅうほう）」は、耶馬渓を代表する景勝地の一つ。鋭く切り立った岩峰が連なる迫力のある景観が魅力の場所です。長い年月をかけて風雨に削られてできた奇岩群は、春の新緑や秋の紅葉の時期になると、まるで絵巻のような美しさを見せてくれます。
その崖下にある「青の洞門（あおのどうもん）」は、18世紀に一人の僧侶・禅海がノミと槌（つち）だけで30年かけて掘った手彫りのトンネル。かつて交通の難所だったこの地に安全な道を作るため、岩を掘り続けたという話に胸を打たれます。
現在の青の洞門には、トンネル内の一部に明り採り窓などの手掘り部分が残っており、それらをたどりながら歩くことができます。

Kyoshuhou, located in Nakatsu City, is one of the symbolic scenic sites in Yabakei. It is a fascinating place with a striking landscape of sheer rock faces. The unique rock formations, carved by wind and rain over a long period of time, seem as if they have been picked straight out of a fairy tale, particularly when spring’s fresh greenery and autumn’s colourful leaves are at their peak.
Aonodomon, located at the cliff’s base, is a tunnel hand–carved by the Buddhist monk Zenkai in the 18th century, created over a period of 30 years using only a chisel and mallet. The story of Zenkai’s relentless efforts in carving a safe route through this once difficult traffic route is inspiring.
In the current Aonodomon, hand–carved “light windows” still remain in parts of the tunnel, offering visitors a glimpse into the past as they walk through.
