One of the charms of Oita, we feel, is that even in well-known tourist spots, the scenery reflects everyday life. KITSUKI CASTLE TOWN / Kitsuki City

Kitsuki City retains the charm of a castle town from the Edo period. Walking through the town, with the earthen walls and cobblestoned slopes evokes a noble ambiance. The preserved samurai residences also offer a glimpse of the lifestyle at the time.

The castle town is characterised by its distinctive townscape of uneven terrain. Kitsuki Castle is centred between two samurai districts, one to the North and one to the South, while the merchant town spreads out through the valleys. The steep slopes of Suya Slope and Shioya Slope face each other and are popular photo spots.

The Kitsuki Castle has overseen the town for 600 years since it was built in 1394. The fortress, situated on a hill encircled by rivers and inlets, has a strong defensive position and retains its historical appearance. The existing castle tower, with breathtaking views from the summit, is a replica, but the exhibition room displays the original armour and other artifacts used by the feudal lord.
