普光寺磨崖仏 (豊後大野市)
豊後大野市にある「普光寺(ふこうじ)」は、飛鳥時代に創建されたと伝わる歴史ある寺院です。鎌倉時代に境内の岩壁に彫られたとされる磨崖仏は、高さ11.3mを誇り、不動明王像を中心に制多迦童子(せいたかどうじ)、矜羯羅童子(こんがらどうじ)を従える荘厳な姿が刻まれています。国東半島の熊野磨崖仏と並び、日本最大級の磨崖仏群として知られています。
訪れるなら、梅雨の時期がおすすめです。雨に濡れた岩肌に光背の炎が浮かび上がり、仏像の威厳がよりいっそう際立ちます。また、普光寺は「アジサイ寺」とも呼ばれ、6月中旬から7月にかけて約3,000株のアジサイが境内を彩ります。この時期には多くの観光客が訪れ、歴史的な仏像と色とりどりの花の共演が楽しめます。事前予約をすれば、岩窟に設けられた懸造りの舞台で瞑想体験も可能。静かな空間で水音や風を感じながら、自分自身と向き合う特別な時間を過ごせます。

Fukoji Temple in Bungo–Ono City, is a historic temple believed to have been established during the Asuka period. The Magaibutsu Buddha statues, believed to have been carved into the rock walls of the temple grounds during the Kamakura period, stand at 11.3 m tall and feature a majestic image of Fudo Myo–ou, accompanied by Seitaka Doji and Kongara Doji. Together with the Kumano Magaibutsu on the Kunisaki Peninsula, this is recognised as one of the largest magaibutsu in Japan.
The perfect time to visit is during the rainy season, when the rain–soaked rock surface makes the halo flames emerge more vividly, enhancing the majesty of the Buddha statues even more. Fukoji Temple is also referred to as the ‘Hydrangea Temple’ and boasts around 3,000 hydrangea plants that bloom beautifully on the temple grounds from mid–June to July. The temple attracts many tourists at this time of year, as the vibrant flowers complement the historical Buddhist statues. By reserving ahead of time, you can even experience meditation on a suspended stage built into the rock cave. In this tranquil space, surrounded by the sounds of the water and the breeze, visitors can spend a memorable time reflectly quietly.
