YUFUGAWA GORGE / Yufu City
YUFUGAWA GORGE / Yufu City
The Yufugawa Gorge is a magnificent gorge stretching about 12 km, and spanning Beppu and Yufu City. The gorge is narrow, with steep cliffs rising between 15–60 m high on either side, and more than 40 waterfalls tumbling down the rocky faces. The breathtaking scenery has earned it the nickname ‘Tyrol of the East’.
The gorge remains cool even in summer, and walking along the paths, surrounded by lush greenery and towering rock walls, the only sounds you will hear are the gentle rush of water and the whisper of the wind. On the other hand, for those seeking adventure, activities like ‘stream walking’, where you dip your feet in the water, and ‘Packrafting’, which involves paddling along the river in a lightweight inflatable boat, are also available.
The area around the Saruwatari Entrance has been restored after flood damage, making it more accessible than before. Please be aware that access to the area may be restricted during rainy weather or high–water levels, so it is advisable to check with the Hasama Yufugawa Gorge Tourist Association before visiting.
