YUNOHIRA ONSEN / Yufu City
Yunohira Onsen, with its cobbled slopes lined with old–fashioned wooden inns, is a nostalgic hot spring resort in Yufu City. The hot spring is believed to have opened around 800 years ago, and the hot spring resort as we know it today was established during the late Edo period. The cobblestoned slope along the Kagonogawa River, which flows through the heart of the spa town, is said to have been built by the villagers some 300 years ago.
It is also famous for the high quality of its spring water, and was once a favoured therapeutic bathing site for many. When the red lanterns gently light the cobbled streets at nightfall, the entire town is wrapped in a tranquillity, making it an ideal place for those seeking quietness.
One of the charms of Yunohira Onsen is that you can experience the warmth of the local people and its community. The heartfelt hospitality of a landlady who welcomes you at a ryokan inn, and the friendly interactions with the shopkeeper of a local corner shop will uplift any traveller’s mood. While it may not be glamourous, it is a place where you can spend time on meaningful self–reflection, akin to a traditional hot spring retreat.
