TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL OF KUNISAKI / Kunisaki City
TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL OF KUNISAKI / Kunisaki City
The Kunisaki Peninsula, located in the northeast of Oita Prefecture, is encircled by mountains and the sea, featuring a distinct religion and culture. Traditional festivals, in particular, remind us that the prayers and lifestyles of the local people are still deeply intertwined with each other.
The ‘Shujo Onie’ festival takes place annually at Tennenji Temple in Bungotakada City on the 7th day of the Lunar New Year. In Kunisaki City, the Shujo Onie ritual is also held in alternating years at Jobutsuji Temple (around the 5th day of the Lunar New Year) and Iwatoji Temple (around the 7th day). This is a solemn traditional ceremony where demons emerge from the flames, accompanied by drumbeats, to pray for good health and a rich harvest.
The ‘Kebesu Festival’ at Kushiku–sha shrine in Kunimi–machi, Kunisaki City, is a fire festival featuring unusual rituals. The festival’s origins and history remain a mystery, but legend has it that ‘Kebesu–don’, a mysterious masked figure rushing towards the fire, and ‘Toba’, who restrains him, engaged in a fierce battle, resulting in fire sparks flying around the venue, and those who catch the sparks will enjoy good health.
Other festivals in Kunisaki include ‘Yoshihiro–gaku’, a music performance at the Gakuniwa Hachiman Shrine in Musashi–machi, and ‘Kawabune Matsuri’, a water festival held in Aki–machi. Both festivals reflect a deep belief and great respect for the importance of nature.
